The sonata for violin and piano, a 37-minute monolithic oration divided into five movements, is a profound and metaphysical work of art. Its very title, "metaphysical," reflects the composer's desire to explore the depths of music and his thoughts on a meta-level. All movements are played attacca, with both instruments enjoying scarce moments of respite. This composition represents a significant advancement from its forerunners, such as Bartok or Shostakovich, in both sound and technique, and bears witness to a young Zivkovic's commitment to creating a serious and intricate work. The last movement, Ison, takes its inspiration from Zivkovic's early piano improvisations, enriched with the addition of the violin part. Composed under the guidance of Vlastimir Trajković, this sonata emerged during Zivkovic's studies at the Music Academy in Belgrade, representing a musical journey that reaches beyond the physical realm and into the metaphysical realm of the spirit and pursuit of musical transcendence.
